Last week while surfing Facebook, I happened upon this article in which an obstetrician gives his professional point-of-view regarding fathers in the labor & delivery room (see original article here). Since this wasn’t the first time that I have heard this debate, I wanted to find out from all of you—especially the men—what you think:

Many experts agree that spanking is not an appropriate form of discipline and could have detrimental effects later in life. The American Academy of Pediatrics states, “Corporal punishment is of limited effectiveness and has potentially deleterious side effects. Spanking children <18 months of age increases the chance of physical injury, and the child is unlikely to understand the connection between the behavior and the punishment.”

This month marks the one year anniversary of The Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding which outlines steps that can be taken to remove some of the obstacles faced by women who want to breastfeed their babies. As a Registered Nurse and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), I whole-heartily believe that “The decision to breastfeed is a personal one, and a mother should not be made to feel guilty if she cannot or chooses not to breastfeed. The success rate among mothers who want to breastfeed can be greatly improved through active support from their families, friends, communities, clinicians, health care leaders, employers and policymakers.” [Read More…]
