It’s November, which means that Prematurity Awareness Month is upon us. The March of Dimes estimates that 1 in 8 babies are born prematurely. In the United States, half a million babies are born prematurely each year! The March of Dimes released the 2011 Premature Birth Report card and the United States scored a “C” when compared with other countries around the world. I don’t know about you, but a “C” is not what I would like to see on my report card.

Did you know there has been much attention placed on padded crib bumpers and its correlation to SIDS? Traditional pillow-like bumper pads are not recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. These products may increase the risk of suffocation if an infant’s face presses against the padding. In addition, air does not flow as freely when using traditional padded bumpers. Overheating and re-breathing of carbon dioxide are two factors associated with an increase risk of SIDS. As a child gets older, the crib bumper can also be used as a leverage device which can result in falls and injury.
