Last month, I was given the opportunity to review Brain Rules for Baby before the book hit the shelves. I found this book very informative and intriguing. Most of us don’t sit around analyzing human brain development nor do we spend our time researching scientific studies to determine which practices are best to boost our child’s intelligence all the while promoting self-esteem and confidence. Dr. Medina, a father and developmental molecular biologist (the study of biochemistry, a blend of biology and chemistry, focusing on the molecular (cellular) level), believes that “Parents need facts, not just advice, about raising their children.” Dr. Medina states, “Parenting is about brain development. [And] The great thing about science is that it takes no sides- and no prisoners.” Throughout this book, Dr. Medina presents research studies and provides parents with information that scientists already know, such as:
- Breastfeeding is a brain booster
- Talking increases IQ
- Intelligence is more than IQ
- Babies need face time
And this is just scratching the surface (I can’t give away the entire book now can I?)!
As we all know, there are thousands of books out there giving parenting advice. My motto has always been that parenting is not a black and white science. I don’t believe that one book has all of the answers that work for every family because each and every child and family are different. What I really like about this book is that it utilizes science and proven research to help guide you in planting the seeds of intelligence and happiness. One of my favorite quotes from the book, “A family based on every suggestion in this book is fantasy. The real-world experience of parenting ranges from waves of exhaustion to oceans of love to ripples of laughter…And it almost never cooperates with our expectations.”
After reading this book, you will undoubtedly know more about human brain development (unless of course you too are a molecular biologist), how to plant the seeds of intelligence and happiness and how to promote the growth of these planted seeds. You will also find out that parenting is not just about brain development, it’s about developing the heart.

I would love to win this book!! My library doesnt have it!
Yes, please, I’d love to hear more. I’ve always agreed with your comment about how not every tip works for every family, it’s usually about finding what works for you and your family. And I’m a big believer in “face time”, eye contact, touching, etc.
Looking forward to read this book before our first baby comes out next year.
